Many many images to edit from my recent 5 week photo tour in Antarctica but wanted to take a moment to post a few favorites as I dig into the folders. This was captured along the Antarctic Peninsula as pockets of light broke through the storm clouds we encountered on a frequent basis. Made for great lighting and photo opportunities.

I’ve just returned from 2 wonderful photo tours in Antarctica including my first visit to the Antarctic Circle. Seems odd after 14 voyages South to only now to have reached that latitude. Would love to have spent more time below the circle but did manage to capture some wonderful photos while there. I’ll be posting a few more in the coming days and you can see images from previous visit at this link. Also, be sure to check out some of my upcoming and closer to home photo tours and workshops like this one in Southern Utah this spring.

Photo of the Day-Iceland Beach

Jokulsarlon, Iceland

The Photo of the Day: Iceland Beach was captured this past November by David C. Schultz during a 6 day photo workshop he lead with the help of a local guide. One of the main attractions for David was this beautiful beach scene along the south-east coast of Iceland. This beach is alongside Jokulsalon, (glacial river lagoon) a lake that is full of chunks of ice that have calved off the Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier. The ice flows a short distance and under Highway 1 on its way out to the nearby Atlantic Ocean where the waves tumble and polish them before they’re washed back ashore onto the black sand beach.

“I’d seen images of this beach for a few years and knew one day I’d have to go there for myself. Once, in Greenland, I’d been able to spend a short amount of time in a small lagoon near the base of a glacier and it had similar polished bergy bits washed ashore. I could have spent a whole day or more there but the tide and our schedule made it impossible. Coming to Iceland was a real treat knowing that I would have plenty of time to explore the beach at different times of day and different lighting conditions. I can’t wait to return.”

David is in the process of making arrangements to hold another Photo Workshop in Iceland, perhaps in January or February of 2015 so that he’ll have a better chance of taking participants into some of the beautiful ice caves as well as photographing the aurora borealis. Of course a return visit to the Jokulsalon beach will be on the shoot list as well! Please check back if you’d like to join David on this or any of his other very popular workshops. Thanks for visiting and Sharing!

Photo of the Day

Tabular Iceberg, Antarctica

Here’s an example of a tubular iceberg which photographer David C. Schultz captured during the first photography tour he held in Antarctica. This tabular iceberg, which by Antarctic stands was relatively small at about 50 feet in height, was practically blocking the entrance to the caldera at Deception Island. The island is part of the South Shetland Islands is an active volcano and at one time home to whaling stations and up until 1967 a research facility.

“We passed by this tabular iceberg while sailing into Neptune’s Bellows, the narrow passage that leads into the caldera itself which at one time was home to whaling stations and up until 1967 a research station. There wasn’t enough time to capture any good photos of it at that time but on our exit I was prepared. We were sailing on the Akademik Ioffe and our captain managed to make several passes around the berg. It’s always interesting how different these massive chunks of ice can appear from different angles.

Photographing from a large moving ship is sometimes a challenge since it seems just as you get the right composition the ship has moved on, and the captain is not about to stop and back-up for you!”

You can see a larger selection of David’s iceberg and Antarctic photographs at his Gallery site, West Light Images.
