Anyone that has joined me on one of my photography tours, especially in Yellowstone National Park knows about my interest in photographing dead trees. There are several select trees within the Park that I’ve captured year after year in many different lighting and weather situations. Around the geyser basins it’s common to find trees that have been choked off from a fresh water source.

This image was shot along the boardwalk in the Midway Geyser Basin late in the afternoon using a Nikon D850, Nikkor 24-70mm, f/11, 1/200 sec., ISO 64, EV -1.33

More details thanks to the National Park Service…

“Much of the soil within the Yellowstone Caldera is the product of hardened lava flows from the region’s volcanic past and is unsuitable for many types of trees.

The central part of the park is characterized by miles upon miles of lodgepole pine, a tree which thrives in the slightly acidic soil of the caldera. The roots of lodgepole pine extend sideways rather than deep into the ground—an advantage in the caldera where the topsoil is very thin and contains few nutrients.

Dead lodgepole pines near some hydrothermal areas look as if they are wearing white anklet socks, at one time called “bobby socks.” The dead trees soak up the mineral-laden water. When the water evaporates, the minerals are left behind, turning the lower portion of the trees white.”

Photo of the Day:

Prince Edward Island, Canada

It’s been several years since I last spent time at Prince Edward Island, Canada, and it’s a return trip long overdue. I’m not sure what I enjoyed most about this area, the landscape, seascape, the people or the lobster dinners. I mean really, McLobster Sandwiches on top of everything else! Yes, I tried one…or perhaps two.

It was actually a very unplanned trip the first time I made my way by ferry to P.E.I. since I was actually driving across country to photograph Nova Scotia. Until I reached the coast of New Brunswick I’d never heard of the Island. I am so happy I decided to board the ferry expecting to spend a few days there, days which in the end turned into two weeks. Never did get to spend any time in Nova Scotia and still haven’t. I have however returned to Prince Edward Island several times during all four seasons and look forward to having time to revisit places and the friends I’d made along the way.

This image of the dory was captured along a back-road at a spot called Savage Harbor. I walked down the shore to where the boat was tied and began shooting quickly as a storm was fast approaching. I wanted to take advantage of the mirror like surface of the bay so wasted little time. The rain held off which allowed me to take some additional time to dislodge the boat from the mud and angle it out into the water which made for a more interesting composition.

The tide was going out so I had to place the boat in one position, wait for the ripples from moving it to disappear before letting it loose, then grabbing the shot once it hit the right spot which draws the viewers eye into the photograph. This was repeated a number of times until finally the sky opened up in a big way. This is still one of my favorite images from my all my visits. There’s just a peacefulness about it. A simple shot reflecting a more simple time perhaps.

Photo of the Day: Santorini

So, for the past few post it seems we’ve focused on ice, polar bears and cold places in general so time to switch things up a bit and post this Photo of the Day: Santorini, image which David captured two years ago. The vibrant colors of Greece, especially evident in a place like Santorini, are a big draw to David and were a stark contrast to the old world flavor of images he captured a week earlier in the north-west mountains of the Zagori Region of Greece.

“This was my first time visiting and photographing in Greece and I seemed to have had the best of both worlds on this trip. The rustic villages with cobblestone roads and paths found tucked away in the mountains of the north to the bright, freshly painted colors found in the islands of Greece. It would be difficult, and unnecessary, to choose between which was more interesting as a photographer. It seems that a theme evolved with a focus on doorways and windows…and a few sunsets too!”

In coming days we’ll be adding additional portfolios to this site, including one featuring David’s work in Greece. Until then please enjoy this select image or visit his Gallery site, West Light Images, where you can view and purchase limited edition prints.
