This is a heads up to photographers that might be planning a visit to Boardman, Oregon to photograph the poplar tree farm.
This past spring I was on a two week photo tour which included Washington State and Oregon. A friend that joined me wanted to spend some time photographing the popular, poplar tree farm seen along Interstate 84 in Boardman, Oregon. I’d seen and photographed this location a few times in the fall but not earlier in the year. I was certain I knew exactly where this place was but drove past it twice as everything looked entirely different than just six months earlier.
Finally, after stopping at the mill office where you must go to get permission to be on the property, I found out that the trees were all being clear-cut and replaced as a dairy and potato farm. MANY of the trees had already been removed at that time and so by this fall you may not have many if any left. I know it will take a few years for all to be of a size to cut but just thought I’d post this so you’d not be surprised. Here’s more information if interested.
Let me and others know what you’ve found if you’re from the area or after your autumn visit. Happy shooting!

Hi David,
Beautiful images. Thank you for sharing and thank you for your updates on Boardman. After hearing of the sale I’ve been planning to go this October but I had heard that the new owners were not allowing photographers on the land any more. Can you let me know a little more about your experience as far as permissions go? I tried to call but can’t get anyone to answer the phone.
Best regards,
Wendy
Hi Wendy. Sorry for the delay in replying to your comment and question and thanks for the compliment.
The “tree farm” and that land was sold but the actual mill that processed the lumber from those trees was still in operation when I was there this past spring. Apparently they are two separate businesses now so not sure about the permission process. You can still shoot from the road into the trees. Before you had to go the the mill to sign a waiver and get permission. That mill is not right on the frontage road but maybe 3/4 mile down a different road off that frontage road. Sorry I don’t have better directions. Best of luck!
Hi David,
Thanks for this post. Is it still worth to get some images from this place around Oct 20th weekend? Or is it going to be empty?
Thank you,
John
HI John
Sorry for this delayed reply. Busy time of year and was in the desert with little connection the past 2 weeks. I have no idea if there are many if any trees left standing at this point as they seemed to have been well on their way to clearing everything when I was there in May. Last fall I was there shooting October 8th and the colors were great so perhaps too late anyway.
Thanks for the question and best of luck in your shooting!
David
